"The exhibition 'Curating Discomfort’ at the Hunterian Museum puts forward discomforting provocations and interventions to help us to understand that museums have perpetuated ideologies of white supremacy: a political, economic and cultural system in which white western ideas control the power of the texts, the material resources and the actions that continue to underpin notions of cultural superiority.
Colonial systems, such as the British Empire, used these ideologies to justify the enslavement and colonisation of peoples and lands around the world. Museums developed within this context and they remain spaces that celebrate and memorialise colonial systems. Collections, displays and labels are a political act that have legacies rooted in colonialism.
We are only now recognising that we are not neutral and that we have, without consideration, been complicit in perpetuating the ideologies of previous centuries.'

The State Hall is one of the world's most beautiful historical libraries. Emperor Charles VI (1685-1740) ordered the construction of this jewel of secular baroque architecture for his Court Library. The State Hall was under construction from 1723 till 1726 according to plans of the famous court architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. The frescoes on the ceiling were finished in 1730 by the court painter Daniel Gran.
The State Hall takes up the whole width of the Josefsplatz and measures a length of 77.7 m, a breadth of 14.2 m and a height of 19.6 m. Two sidewings and the cupola space give the hall a three-part structure. The frescoes in the entrance wing deal with secular topics and topics of war, while the frescoes in the Peace Wing adjoining the Hofburg with the original entrance for the Emperor and his court show allegories of heaven and peace. The fresco in the cupola, just under 30 metres high, presents the apotheosis, i.e., the "divinisation" of Charles VI, with an allegorical reference to the erection of the Library.
Today the State Hall hosts 200,000 books from 1501 to 1850, among them the 15,000 volume collection of Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663-1736) in the middle oval.

Wandering the Belvedere Palace art collections moved me in ways I hadn't anticipated. Front of my mind were the lyrics from the Paris Paloma song, 'Labour':
"All day, every day, therapist, mother, maid
Nymph then a virgin, nurse then a servant
Just an appendage, live to attend him
So that he never lifts a finger
24-7, baby machine
So he can live out his picket fence dreams
It's not an act of love if you make her
You make me do too much labour."

๐ Congratulations to the National Gallery of Art for today's grand opening of their newest exhibition: Walking into the exhibition this morning was a sensory marvel and spoke to the power of thoughtful curation.
Curated by artistโฏJaune Quick-to-See Smith (Citizen of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Nation), this exhibition brings together works by an intergenerational group of nearly 50 living Native artists practicing across the United States.โฏTheir powerful expressions reflect the diversity of Native American individual, regional, and cultural identities. At the same time, these works share a worldview informed by thousands of years of reverence, study, and concern for the land.
Through a variety of practices—including weaving, beadwork, sculpture, painting, printmaking, drawing, photography, performance, and video—these artists visualize Indigenous knowledge of land/ landbase/ landscape. Together, the works in ๐๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ ๐๐ข๐ณ๐ณ๐ช๐ฆ๐ด ๐๐ถ๐ณ ๐๐ฏ๐ค๐ฆ๐ด๐ต๐ฐ๐ณ๐ด underscores the self-determination, survivance, and right to self-representation of Indigenous peoples.

Yesterday I started working with the Smithsonian! ๐ฅณ
I'm thrilled to share that my project management services have been contracted by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Services (SITES) to coordinate their Exhibition Starter Kits program.
Exhibition Starter Kits give local organizations a great opportunity to use Smithsonian exhibition content as a device for giving national context to local exhibitions. Host museums use exhibition support materials and a guided script to create an integrated, seamless presentation of both national and local content. The build-it-yourself concept helps communities preserve their past by presenting it in the most relevant way to their local audiences. Although participating communities use a Smithonian-created outline for developing the exhibition, the bulk of the content, imagery, and artifacts are totally local. Participating communities build the exhibition to the needs of their constituents and their facilities, using the most effective materials for the project.
Because this position is fully remote except for a occasional work trip, I'm over the moon that I will continue living on the west coast of Scotland whilst performing this job. ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ๐บ๐ฒ
I couldn't have imagined a better scenerio where I am able to work for my dream employer from this ideallic location. Five years ago I was an intern for the same department, and promised myself I would be returning. Today, that dream has been realized. My two worlds have merged, and I'm excited to see where this journey takes me next!

The Inner Hebrides, an archipelago off the west coast of Scotland, is dotted with many far-flung cultural treasures off the main tourist route: such as the fantastical Mount Stuart on the Isle of Bute.
Accessible by a ferry ride across the Firth of Clyde, the 19th century Gothic revival palace is a lavish amalgamation of the 3rd Marquess of Bute's varied interests in Arthurian legends, astronomy and astrology, cathedrals of medieval Europe, and ancient palaces of Rome, Greece, and Byzantium. The carefully crafted 19th century interiors reflect a fantastical imagination realized by the architect Sir Robert Rowand Anderson, and create a atmosphere of mythical reverence for the ancestral home of the Stuarts.

I am so grateful for the opportunity to work on the Resource Room for ๐๐ญ๐ฃ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ต๐ข ๐๐ฉ๐ช๐ต๐ต๐ญ๐ฆ: ๐๐ณ๐ฆ๐ข๐ต๐ฆ ๐๐ข๐ฏ๐จ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ด๐ญ๐บ exhibition, now on view at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh until 7 January 2024!
"Making art is a deeply hopeful act for Alberta Whittle. Through her expansive research and generous storytelling, Alberta explores the history and legacies of transatlantic chattel slavery, Scotland and the UK's role in Empire, and the violence of colonialism which continues to permeate society today.
Against this backdrop of political and social turbulence, Alberta invites us to come together to confront difficult truths from both the past and our present times, in order to find collective healing. She centres care and self-compassion as vital means to resist racism and anti-Blackness.
Throughout this exhibition, Alberta welcomes us to slow down and pause. Her works consider ideas about family and belonging, connection and dialogue. Recurring themes in her work of ancestral knowledge, language and mythology offer routes towards resistance and renewal. Often drawing on profoundly personal materials, poetic imagery, and intimate stories, Alberta's message is ultimately one of hope; hope for a different future, and a call for us to invest in love'."

๐คฉ The past few months have all led to this: the opening of ๐๐ญ๐ฃ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ต๐ข ๐๐ฉ๐ช๐ต๐ต๐ญ๐ฆ: ๐๐ณ๐ฆ๐ข๐ต๐ฆ ๐๐ข๐ฏ๐จ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ด๐ญ๐บ at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art! Alongside my collaborator @aqsa.arif.art, we worked with Alberta and the lovely NGS curators to create a resource room that echoed the loving environment fostered at the Venice Biennale. The exhibition is free, and open in Edinburgh until 7 January 2024!
"Welcome to the Resource Room, inspired by the deeply thought-provoking work of Alberta Whittle. This room is designed for you to further explore the artist's unique vision and perspective. Alberta is motivated by the desire to use self-compassion and collective care as methods in confronting anti-Blackness. This room is an active space to reflect on these themes and to find out more about her research and ideas.
Whether you prefer a hands-on approach, visual aids, or reading you'll find a wealth of information and materials to support your journey into Alberta's wider practice. Take your time, browse the books, and immerse yourself in a relaxed environment. From poetry building to collaborative weaving, we've put together a variety of resources for you to explore."
